Brief History
The Stillwater lacrosse program was started in 2003. The program began with a youth clinic taught in the summer of 2003, which introduced lacrosse to boys aged 6-12 in a summer hockey camp. The equipment used in the program was part of a starter kit from US Lacrosse.
Subsequent to the camp, a spring clinic that introduced the sport was launched in 2004. Over 75 boys participated in the program, and summer teams were formed at the 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 levels. Stillwater teams played other East Metro teams and the sport began to gain popularity at the youth levels.
Team rosters for the summer included 55 players.
A second introductory clinic was held in the spring of 2005 for new and returning players. These clinics were sponsored by Grassroots Sports, which is focused on developing youth in a variety of sports. The 10-session program included the basics of ball handling, catching and throwing and fundamental play.
Enrollment for the second clinic topped 145 players from grades 3-12.
Stillwater fielded teams at the 7-8, 9-10 and Junior Varsity level in the spring and fielded teams at the 3-4, 5-6 (two teams), and 7-8 levels. Summer participation included 70 players. The Stillwater teams were all above .500 winning percentage, and the 3-4th grade team lost only one game.
